Recipe for momo
This blog is about traditional momo making recipe. I love this momo recipe and i use this everyday.
This momo is so tasty. I use the ingredients from home which are available. The green chutney is available in the shop.
Making momos at home involves three main components: preparing the dough, creating a savory filling, and steaming them to perfection.
1. The Dough
The wrapper is typically made from a simple, firm dough that becomes soft and pliable after resting.
- Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour (maida), 1/2 tsp salt, and water (approx. 1/2 to 3/4 cup).
- Preparation: Mix flour and salt, then gradually add water to knead into a smooth, non-sticky dough.
- Resting: Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 20–30 minutes to develop elasticity.
2. The Filling
Fillings can be vegetarian or meat-based. Most recipes suggest stir-frying ingredients briefly on high heat to remove excess moisture while keeping them crunchy.
- Vegetable Momo: Finely chopped cabbage, grated carrots, onions, and bell peppers. Sauté with minced ginger, garlic, green chilies, soy sauce, and black pepper.
- Chicken Momo: Minced chicken mixed with finely chopped onions, cilantro, ginger-garlic paste, soy sauce, and a dash of oil or butter for juiciness.
- Paneer Momo: Crumbled paneer sautéed with aromatics and spices like garam masala.
3. Assembly and Shaping
- Rolling: Divide the rested dough into small equal portions and roll them into thin 3–4 inch circles.
- Technique: Keep the edges thinner than the center to ensure the base doesn't break and the top isn't too doughy.
- Folding: Place a spoonful of filling in the center. Use your thumb and forefinger to pleat the edges and pinch them together to seal the top.
4. Steaming
- Preparation: Grease the steamer tray with oil or line it with parchment paper or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking.
- Process: Arrange momos so they do not touch. Steam for 10–15 minutes (vegetable) or 15–20 minutes (meat) until the dough becomes glossy and translucent.
5. Classic Momo Chutney
The essential spicy accompaniment is made by boiling 3–4 tomatoes and dried red chilies, then blending them with garlic, ginger, salt, and a splash of vinegar or lemon juice until smooth.
